Genocide is being committed in Gaza
On October 7, 2023, Hamas committed war crimes in Israel, which Switzerland rightly condemned.
Israel then decided on the “erasure” of Gaza, which is now effective: 96% of all crops, all infrastructure (roads, schools, even cemeteries), and 92% of residential buildings have been destroyed. 1.9 million people (the population of French-speaking Switzerland) have been concentrated in an area smaller than the canton of Geneva, where they survive in tents, without running water, electricity, or latrines, exposed to cold and hunger.
No child is receiving the dietary diversity required for normal development, with a large part of the aid remaining blocked at the border. To date, over 71,000 people (including 18,400 children) have been killed; over 171,000 people have been injured. And the toll continues to rise daily. Palestinians have been subjected to extreme cruelty: children have been shot by snipers, others have had to undergo amputations without anesthesia. Over 10,863 Palestinians are detained, including 3,521 without charge or trial, and subjected to torture – 84 have died.
The Israeli regime prohibits access to the press, kills journalists (289 to date) and humanitarian workers (500 to date), and kills or arrests countless doctors. But the United Nations has the necessary channels to investigate. The Independent Commission of Inquiry of the Human Rights Council on the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory has concluded that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of genocide have been committed. As have B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories10, and other NGOs.
Furthermore, many Israeli leaders make no secret of their objective – the total destruction and then colonization of the Gaza Strip – and publicly assume responsibility for the means deployed to achieve it, including starvation. Therefore, no doubt about the reality of the international crimes systematically committed by Israel is any longer permissible.
