Microsoft Closes Cloud Access for an Israeli Unit

September 26, 2025 – +972 – Microsoft has ended the Israeli army’s access to the technology it used to store immense quantities of intelligence on Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and Gaza.

This decision follows an investigation published last month by +972 Magazine, Local Call, and The Guardian, which revealed how Unit 8200, the Israeli army’s elite cyber warfare agency, stored intercepted recordings of millions of Palestinian phone calls on Microsoft’s cloud platform, Azure, thus creating one of the world’s most intrusive surveillance data collections targeting a single population group. According to this joint investigation, these data have been used over the past two years to plan deadly airstrikes in Gaza and to arrest Palestinians in the West Bank.
